This year, Alcatel had seen the big picture for the Mobile World Congress. In addition to its name change (Alcatel One Touch was simply renamed Alcatel), the company introduced two new Idol: Idol Idol 4S and 4. It is the latter that today we are most interested in. The Idol 4, which has the heavy task of succeeding the excellent Idol 3 released last year must therefore be equal to succeed in a market increasingly competitive. So discover our grip Alcatel Idol 4.
The Alcatel Idol 4 will be available from next June and costs 279 euros. One model will be on the menu, namely a 16GB version (expandable via microSD). The colors for the launch will be the same as the 4S Idol: Gold (Metal Gold), rose gold and black (Dark Gray). Caution, however, the color change does not match the body of the smartphone (which is blank), but to the side edges of metal.
The Alcatel Idol 4 is one of those smartphones that offer a premium design for less than 300 euros, like the OnePlus X and Honor 7. The brand, once French (now Chinese owned) brought us a terminal 5.2 inches made of metal and glass.
The Idol 4 is a little smaller than its big brother, the Idol 4S, the upscale brand. At the front, there is a 5.2 inch IPS display. The AMOLED screen is indeed reserved for the 4S. The Alcatel Idol 4 weighs 130 grams (the terminal is very light in the hand) and its dimensions are 147 x 72.5 x 7.1 mm.
At the top we find the sensor to reduce noise and minijack. The finish is slightly reminiscent of the iPhone or the S6 with two aluminum stripes in the middle. The glass is completely flat. On the sides are the volume buttons up, the location for microSD and SIM slot (which can also be used as dual SIM card) and the famous Boom Key button which I will discuss later. Finally, at the bottom, we find the microUSB port.
Overall, the Idol 4 is a very nice smartphone to learn and very elegant. To give you an idea, finish that reminded me of the Huawei P8.
The IPS LCD screen of the Alcatel Idol 4 has a diagonal of 5.2 inches with a definition Full-HD (1080 × 1920 pixels), which gives a pixel density of 424 pixels per inch. The screen is bright and offers good viewing angles. However, one does not find all the qualities of the AMOLED screen idol 4S.
The Idol 4 presents some peculiarities. The most important is the possibility of utilizer the phone upside down. This is also why it was not possible to include a fingerprint reader.
Boom Key is a button present on the right edge of the terminal that provides access to additional software features on the smartphone.
Six modes are present as well:
The Idol 4 comes with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and Alcatel personalization overlay. This home interface is not particularly pretty but is still very similar to Android stock. One detail that I did not like too much the smartphone embeds many preinstalled applications, over fifty in total (social networks, games, cleaning application).
Under the hood, the Idol 4 hexacore features a Snapdragon processor 617 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. Alcatel has also planned to launch a model with 3GB of RAM later. The smartphone also has 16 GB of internal storage, expandable by microSD card.
During our grip, we could not test the phone to its limits. I have seen no unexpected applications or lags. For most uses, the phone should be more than enough.
Alcatel Idol 4 - Sound quality
The speakers are one of the curiosities of the Idol 4. You can listen to music with speakers front and rear interchangeably. There are also speakers in the upper and lower parts, so that you can use the phone to place or upside down.
The Idol has two cameras delivering good results. The primary sensor of 13 megapixels Samsung is signed and is accompanied by a dual LED flash. The front camera of 8 megapixel camera also has an LED flash front. Only downside, the Idol does not offer a manual mode where we can change the ISO or exposure, among others.
It is a non-removable battery 2610 mAh of which takes place within the Idol 4. The feature is not spectacular when you consider that this is an IPS Full HD screen but Alcatel us promised one day and a half of battery life in normal use.
The Alcatel Idol 4 is the best smartphone for the budget we saw in Barcelona at MWC 2016. Its value is excellent. Its design, its camera, its performance and extra features are promising. All with a stock Android experience close. Finally, the only negative is its release date. It must indeed wait the months of May and June in order to obtain one.
